Single Self-Cleaning Water Filtration System

Single water filtration encompasses systems that work with one self-cleaning filtration mechanism. They are straightforward in design, cost-efficient and effective for most standard filtration applications. Whether it concerns separating coarse solids, protecting pumps or continuously filtering process water — single self-cleaning filtration systems offer a reliable and low-maintenance solution.

Dutch Flow Control offers six single self-cleaning water filtration systems, each with its own operating principle and area of application.

Single Self-Cleaning Water Filtration System

Self-Cleaning Screen Bend Filter

The screen bend is a fully static filter system with no moving parts, self-cleaning in the range of 0.25 to 2 mm. The water flows across a curved surface positioned at an angle of approximately 60 degrees, and the separation of solids and liquid takes place by skimming. Solid particles such as fibres, granules and organic material are retained on the screen surface and slide by gravity into a collection trough.

Due to the absence of mechanical components, the screen bend requires virtually no maintenance and the risk of breakdowns is minimal. The unit is available in 304 or 316 stainless steel. For heavier or sticky material, optional additions are available such as a vibration mechanism, spray nozzles or brushes.

Applications screen bend

  • Wastewater
  • Process water
  • Systems with a high contamination load and gravity feed

Features screen bend

  • No moving parts — no wear, no breakdowns
  • Slot widths from 0.25 mm to 2 mm
  • Gravity-driven — no pumps or energy required
  • Optionally expandable with spray nozzles, brushes or collection trough

Self-Cleaning Drum Filter (RDF)

The drum filter is a mechanical, continuously rotating filter system for separating suspended and floating solids from water and process liquids. The self-cleaning drum filter has a filtration range of 0.25 to 4 mm. The water flows through a slowly rotating drum fitted with wedge wire. Solids are retained on the outer surface of the drum and are continuously removed by a fixed scraper.

Internal spray nozzles (4–6 bar) keep the screen slots free from blockages during operation. The system operates fully automatically and is suitable for continuous, uninterrupted use. Capacity ranges from approximately 25 m³/hr to 1,770 m³/hr.

Applications drum filter

  • Wastewater and process water treatment
  • Sewage water treatment
  • Paper and textile production
  • Plastics and (petro)chemical processing
  • Meat and vegetable processing

Features drum filter

  • Fully automatic and suitable for continuous use
  • Low investment costs and minimal maintenance
  • Low energy consumption
  • High flow rate with high contamination load possible
  • Standard configuration for contamination loads up to approximately 200 mg/l
  • Higher contamination loads are possible
  • Manufactured in stainless steel

Self-Cleaning ACF Coarse Filter

The ACF coarse filter is a fully automatic system for removing coarse particles from process water. This self-cleaning coarse filter has a filtration range of 0.1 to 5 mm and uses a wedge wire filter element.

The system cleans itself automatically via a mechanical scraper or a backflush mechanism. As soon as contamination accumulates and the pressure differential reaches a preset threshold, a cleaning cycle of just six seconds is initiated — without interrupting the primary process. The construction is manufactured from 316L stainless steel and is highly suitable for industrial process conditions.

Applications ACF coarse filter

  • Protection of pumps, heat exchangers and pipework
  • Pre-filtration ahead of fine filters or membrane systems
  • Cooling water treatment
  • Wash water for vegetables, potatoes or flower bulbs
  • Granulate filtration
  • Industrial process water
  • Intake of surface water and wastewater

Features ACF coarse filter

  • Automatic cleaning in 6 seconds
  • Low pressure drop and low maintenance
  • Capacities from 25 to 650 m³/hr
  • Corrosion-resistant 316L stainless steel
  • Can be cleaned with mild acids to counter the build-up of salts, scale and organic material

SCF — Automatic Self-Cleaning Filter

The SCF filter is designed for applications that require continuous and uninterrupted filtration. This self-cleaning filter has a filtration range of 15 micron to 3000 micron. The liquid flows from the inside to the outside through a cylindrical filter element. The system continuously monitors the pressure differential across the filter element. As soon as a preset threshold is reached, a short cleaning cycle starts automatically.

During this cycle, internal spray nozzles clean the filter element through a combined rotating and axial movement. Flow is maintained uninterrupted throughout the cleaning process. The SCF filter combines high capacity with a compact design. The stainless steel housing guarantees a long service life and minimal maintenance.

Applications SCF

  • Process monitoring for process water and cooling water
  • Spray nozzle protection
  • Industrial water treatment and inline filtration for 2" to 16" pipelines
  • Protection of downstream equipment

Features SCF

  • Fully automatic operation without process interruption
  • Filtration range from 15 to 3,000 micron
  • Robust stainless steel housing
  • Compact dimensions, suitable for inline installation in 2" to 16" pipelines
  • Fast return on investment due to low operational costs

HL-SCF — Self-Cleaning Water Filter for High Contamination Loads

The HL-SCF filter is a self-cleaning filter system that is a variant of the SCF filter, developed specifically for processes with very high concentrations of solid contaminants. The key difference between these self-cleaning filters lies in the flushing: the HL-SCF filter has continuous flushing ahead of the self-cleaning filter, whereas an SCF filter flushes intermittently on pressure differential.

The HL-SCF filter has a filtration range of 35 to 400 micron and is an intelligent cleaning system that ensures the filter element is continuously flushed every 5 seconds by rotating spray nozzles, without interrupting the filtration process. This makes full (100%) cleaning of the filter element possible even after millions of flush cycles.

Applications HL-SCF

  • Reuse of wastewater and irrigation water
  • Pre-filtration of sand filters
  • Cooling water inlet filtration
  • Filtration for recirculation systems with high contamination loads
  • Steel, paper and plastics industries
  • Sugar production
  • Seawater filtration

Features HL-SCF

  • Continuous 100% cleaning of the filter element without process interruption
  • Cleaning cycle of just 3–5 seconds
  • Resistant to millions of cleaning cycles
  • Suitable for low operating pressures
  • Fully automatic — no operator intervention required

MFF — Self-Cleaning 3 Micron Filtration

The MFF Microfilter is a self-cleaning filter system for the removal of fine particles, with a filtration range down to 0.5 micron and most applications in the 3 micron filtration range. The system uses rotating filter drums fitted with cassettes of multi-layer polyester fibres.

When the pressure differential across the filter element reaches a preset threshold, a high-pressure flush cycle starts automatically. Water jets clean the polyester fibres effectively and thoroughly, without the need for consumable filter material or replacement media. After the brief flush cycle, the system resumes normal filtration.

Thanks to the modular construction of the MFF, the system can easily be scaled up to higher capacities. The design focuses on fast and straightforward maintenance with minimal downtime.

Applications MFF

  • Pre-filtration of RO membrane systems (reverse osmosis)
  • Removal of insoluble heavy metals from industrial wastewater
  • Removal of cysts and parasites (such as cryptosporidium) from drinking water and fish farm water
  • Removal of legionella in cooling water and shower systems
  • Cleaning of spray systems and wash installations

Features MFF

  • Many 3 micron applications delivered to full customer satisfaction over the past 15 years
  • Multi-layer polyester fibres
  • No consumable filter material — no replacement costs
  • Modular construction for easy capacity expansion
  • Fast maintenance with minimal downtime
  • Fully automatic cleaning cycle
